At Lewis Street, we engage in Outdoor Education to enable our children to grow and develop diverse skills in a unique environment. We take selected pupils from Year 3 and Year 5 on a weekly basis to a local large woodland to take part in Outdoor Education programmes ran by our own school staff. These programs have been carefully developed by outdoor learning professionals to have maximum impact with specific objectives and groups of children in mind. Our staff are then trained by the professionals to deliver the course content so that we are able to sustain this opportunity for all of our children for years to come.
We aim to implement curriculum objectives from in class but mainly we aim to enable our children to develop internal qualities such as:
- Perseverance and Resilience
- Confidence and a "can do" attitude
- Emotional Intelligence (Self motivation, Self Regulation, Empathy and Social Skills)
- Tolerance and Respect for others
- Respect for our community and world
- Integrity and Trust
- Self-Esteem and Dignity
- A desire to Explore and Learn
- Team Skills and Practical Skills
We've found that after completion of these programs, our aims as stated above are often met to various degrees. The children often state how much they enjoy the programs and state an interest in visiting woodlands and forests outside of school time.
