Our volunteers cover a range of duties from reading with the children, supporting writing, guided reading activities, producing displays, assisting on school trips and attending swimming sessions. The children enjoy having new adults in their classrooms and volunteers have been invaluable to both Teachers and Learning Support Assistants.
Our volunteers find their experience in school both useful and highly rewarding. One volunteer recently said:
“Volunteering at Lewis Street has given me an amazing opportunity to gain valuable classroom experience and has enabled me to observe first hand how it all works. The prospect of working with Year 6 was daunting at first but my fears quickly disappeared when I was warmly received into the class. I have been working with some great children who teach me something new every week. In fact, I was able to answer a question on Mastermind because of something I learnt with one of my readers!”
Many volunteers have gone on to gain employment working with children, either within our partnership or beyond.
