The pupil premium is allocated to schools in respect of children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months. This applies to both mainstream and non-mainstream settings. Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit to “close the gap” between children from disadvantaged circumstances and those above the low-income threshold – it is not linked to a specific child, but is to be used for overall impact. However, we are held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families.
In 2017-2018 Lewis Street Primary School received £193,983 based on 145 pupils who either received Free School Meals or who are Looked After Children. This equates to approximately 40% of the pupils on roll.
We use our pupil premium budget to increase the opportunities and attainment of disadvantaged pupils, using the following means: Group interventions and one to one teaching to promote talk particularly in Early Years to increase the number of pupils achieving a 'good level of development' by the time they leave Reception; Screening for all Reception pupils in Speech and Language as well as the provision of a speech and language specialist shared with our partner school; Additional staffing to provide small group teaching to boost attainment in reading, writing and maths.; A Children and Families Officer to work with vulnerable families, particularly around safeguarding; Provision of small group and individual work, building social and emotional skills, to enable some learners to engage more effectively with learning programmes and to promote good attendance; Provision of Place2Be an on-site school counselling service to provide emotional and therapeutic support to pupils and their families; Provision for targeted 'outdoor learning' support for children who may be struggling emotionally and socially, or for those who have specific identified issues. The programmes aim to develop children's senses of personal safety, security and self-confidence. At Lewis street, we engage in Outdoor Education to enable our children to grow and develop diverse skills in a unique environment. In Year 3 the programme is called ‘Wild Tribe’ and in Year 5 ‘Forest Crew’. All of the above is underpinned by our core school values of EXCELLENCE; RESPECT; CHALLENGE and SELF-BELIEF. Progress and impact is measured using Strengths and Difficulties’ Questionnaires (SDQ); Boxall Assessments as well as qualitative feedback, including pupil voice. In Year 6 all the children have the opportunity to take part in the annual residential trip to Lledr hall. There is funding for music lessons across the whole school as well as subsidy of educational visits for pupils to support holistic learning and development.
• Progress of disadvantaged pupils by the end of KS2 is better in reading and writing than that of non-disadvantaged pupils.
• Progress of children is good in all year groups.

• Educational trips are enjoyed by all children and enhance learning.
• Support for families has increased and parents are actively involved in their children’s learning.
• All children have the opportunity to play an instrument and take part in high quality music lessons in school.
