Modern Foreign Languages - Spanish

At Lewis Street we celebrate diversity of both culture and experience. Learning a language opens up our pupils to different cultures from around the world, helping them to both understand and be understood in another language.

We provide high-quality languages education that foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our pupils are introduced to Spanish right from Nursery. They have the chance to participate in Super Learning Days where children learn all about the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and develop simple language through speaking and singing. Formal weekly Spanish lessons commence in Key Stage 2. From Year 3 upwards students participate in language lessons where their speaking, listening, reading and writing is developed.

Children progress through a programme which carefully develops their language and allows pupils to gradually increase both their spoken and written Spanish. To enhance the teaching of Spanish within our schools, staff across our partnership have engaged in an intensive, immersive Spanish Course in Santander. Recently, we have started Pen Pals with other schools in our local area. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to use their new skills to communicate with other children.

Studying Spanish gives our pupils a sound foundation in modern foreign languages helping them progress further in secondary school and beyond.
