PSHE

Introduction

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education, which helps them develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Key elements of PSHE are Relationships Education and Health Education. These elements are statutory- compulsory parts of the PSHE curriculum. To support our delivery of a PSHE curriculum which encompasses the new requirements regarding Relationships and Health Education (RHE) we use the Jigsaw PSHE programme throughout school. Through the spiral curriculum, children receive their full entitlement to all aspects of RHE.

 

 

What do schools have to teach in PSHE Education?

At Lewis Street School we teach PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) using 'Jigsaw PSHE', as the programme links perfectly with our values and, as you know, these are embedded throughout our school. 

We value PSHE as a key way to support children's development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are and to empower them with a voice; our intent is for our children to be equipped for life as they travel through our ever-evolving world. 

We teach PSHE as a whole-school approach to underpin our children's development as people and because we believe that this supports our children's abilities to learn. 

To ensure a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw: the mindful approach to PSHE; it encompasses the new requirements regarding Health and Relationships Education (RHE) and it will be used throughout our children's school journey.

We feel that it is comprehensive and includes a wealth of quality resources. The lessons will take place once a week and will range from 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the children's age.

 Aim:

Both our school mission statement and values of Respect, Excellence, Challenge and Self-Belief reflect what we hope to deliver in PSHE. We want our children to develop self-awareness, show respect for themselves and others, and, with positive self-esteem, live a successful life.

The aims of PSHE education in our school are to:

- Provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.

- Provide a curriculum which fits our pupils and is up to date; responding to the ever-changing modern world.

- Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place

- Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene

- Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy

- Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships

- Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies

- Support the school’s ethos of nurturing a caring, respectful community.

Sex Education 

We believe children should understand the facts about human reproduction before they leave primary school. We believe that Sex Education refers to human reproduction. Parents may request that their child is withdrawn from Sex Education lessons that refer to human reproduction.

These lessons occur in the Jigsaw 'Changing Me' theme and are:

Year 5, Lesson 4- Conception

Year 6, lesson 4- Conception, birth


Teachers will inform parents before this theme is to be taught.

These are the only lessons that pupils can be withdrawn from.

Jigsaw Units: 

The Jigsaw teaching and learning materials are split into six puzzles, all of which are sequential; they begin with 'Being Me in My World' at the beginning of the year, which helps pupils with settling in to their new year group and ends with 'Changing Me' which support pupils as they transition to their next year group and with the changes that they will face as they begin to get older.

The Knowledge Organisers, which are divided into age groups, are there to let you know the content that the children will be learning in each Jigsaw Puzzle Piece. No Outsiders

All schools are required by law to teach children about equality and anti-discrimination. We use 'No Outsiders' as our Equality curriculum. 'No Outsiders' uses picture books such as 'Elmer', 'Ten little pirates' and 'And Tango makes Three' to teach children about fairness and equality.

 

Parent Consultation - December 2022

We held a PSHE/RSE Curriculum Coffee Morning in school on 13th December. The morning, which was well attended, was a great success. A presentation detailed how we teach PSHE/RSE, using the Jigsaw curriculum. There was a particular emphasis on Relationships Education. After the presentation there was an opportunity for parents to ask questions and discuss any concerns.
