Art & Design

Art & Design allows pupils at Lewis Street to explore their creativity and try different methods to express their own ideas. Our curriculum equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art & design. Pupils also learn about the work of great artists and designers.

Art and Design at Lewis Street

At Lewis Street, our aim is to support our artists to develop confidence in expressing themselves creatively and imaginatively. By exploring and discussing great artists and styles or art, they will come to understand that every artist is unique. Our children are encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes as they develop their own style as an artist. They will develop their own opinions and preferences whilst developing their evaluation and and analysis talents. The skills they will develop will be transferable to other aspects of their lives and learning, and should open their eyes to future creative opportunities.

Purpose of study

Art, craft and design embody some of highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge all pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflects and shapes our history and culture and wealth of our nation.

The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpting and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, crafts makers and designers, and understanding the historical and cultural development of their art forms
