Success Stories!

Miss Lindsay Shearer who began her journey as a parent volunteer, has now been employed by Lewis Street since 2014 and continues to work as a Learning Support Assistant in our Year 4 class.

Miss Donna Farrell who also began her journey as a parent volunteer at Lewis Street, has also been employed as a Learning Support Assistant at our partnership school Christ Church CE Primary School since 2014.

Mrs Gillian Bettahar began her journey as a parent volunteer at Christ Church and completed her teaching assistant course whilst volunteering and was later employed as a Welfare Assistant. In September 2017, Mrs Bettahar was employed as an LSA at Lewis Street.

Volunteer Expectations

Our volunteers cover a range of duties from reading with the children, supporting writing, administration of guided reading resources, displays, assisting on school trips and swimming.

The children are enjoying having new adults in their classrooms and their assistance has been invaluable to the Teachers and Learning Support Assistants.

When asked for feedback on how they are settling in one of our volunteers said the following:

“Volunteering at Lewis Street has given me an amazing opportunity to gain valuable classroom experience and has enabled me to observe first hand how it all works. The prospect of working with Year 6 was daunting at first but my fears quickly disappeared when I was warmly received into the class. I have been working with some great children who teach me something new every week. In fact, I was able to answer a question on Mastermind because of something I learnt with one of my readers!”
